One sure fire way to get more traffic is to post more targeted content, more often. However, coming up with all that content can seem like an impossible task. The fact is the internet is hungry and if you want to be successful using content to pull traffic to your site, more is better.
Of course, just any type of content is not better but more targeted content is better. You can’t just publish anything. You must publish with thought to your audience, your products, and services, as well as frequency. To do quality and quantity you’ll need to have a plan. The best way to do that is to come up with an editorial calendar.
First, remember what the content you publish is supposed to accomplish:
- Feed the search engines so that search engines send customers to your content due to their search.
- Provide informative, engaging, and actionable content for your audience that inspires them to do something.
Knowing this, you’re going to want to create several types of content. Some of your content will be informative. Some will be engaging. Yet other content will be sales content with a clear call to action. Your content needs to address your customers’ problems in a caring and understanding way that promotes trust. Your content needs to provide value to your customer without them buying a thing,
That is a tall order. Thankfully you can get it done when you break it all down and put it into a calendar. Think about the various categories of content you need to create based on the products and services you want to promote. For example, you may need some content that discusses a particular problem that many of your ideal audience members have. You may want to bring up the problem in an informational way before you post something tomorrow about the solution to the problem.
If you set this up in a publication calendar it will be helpful. First, write down for each month of the next year what products or services you plan to promote. If you’re unsure, you might want to at least create the category that you’re planning to create the product about.
If you don’t create your own products, this is the opportunity for you to look at the affiliate products you promote and find out what their creators have in the planning stages by participating in whatever affiliate program they offer such as Facebook Groups or email discussions. Often they will give you enough warning about the topic so you have time to create your own content. If they don’t seem to offer it, ask them.
If you offer services, you can still come up with content for an editorial calendar. Think about the real benefits you offer with your service. For example, if you’re a graphic designer, you’re not just offering graphic design. You’re offering your customers freedom from worry about that part of their project. You can write about these benefits.
Whatever you choose to write about, put it in the editorial calendar and fill it out as far in advance as possible. Ideally, you want time to write and publish in advance for any given day, but if you can’t do that, you should at least be able to look at the calendar and know what you’re working on today. This will help you get things done because you won’t be having to figure out what to create, you’ll just look at the idea and then do the work that day. Over time, you should shoot for being at least a quarter ahead of your launch dates and publication dates in the work.
